Understanding GGG's Knockout Power
bad kickboxer (tries) explaining a boxing style (google photos came in clutch)
Welcome to my first ever blog post! If you don’t know me, I’m James. First, I’d like to thank you for reading this. This is my first ever analysis of a boxers fighting style, and will be centered around the famous Gennadiy Gennadyevich Golovkin, which is a very weird name to pronounce.
Understanding Triple G’s Power
Jab Technique:
Golovkin uses many tools in his arsenal, which includes a stiff heavy jab. Golovkin will commonly throw the jab, leaning forward to generate momentum and stepping into his punch to generate more power.
Along with his strong jab, he constantly shifts his direction and the rhythm of the fight by alternating guard levels. With his strong straight punches, opponents become more careful which causes them to overreact to feints.
Footwork and Torque:
Golovkin also loves to lead with his rear hand. Golovkin will step to his left, and unpins his back foot which opens up his hips. This allows Golovkin to swing through with more torque, generating much more power into his punches.
This technique gives him the ability to shift into southpaw stance, chasing down his opponents effectively.
Ring Control:
Golovkin excels at cutting off areas of the ring by cross stepping, where his lead foot coming in front of his back foot. This cross step motion keeps his stance narrow and allows him to move farther.
The cross step also lets Golovkin move diagonally rather than side ways which takes away his opponents escape routes. By keeping weight on his front foot, and not opening up his stance, he can smoothly transition into his jab or cross.
Defense:
Although Golovkin is willing to take some shots, he employs a combination of head movement and a tight guard to deflect punches. Golovkin will also occasionally backup or shoulder roll, he generally goes forward and into an ongoing attack.
Golovkin moves his head just enough to allow punches to roll off his arms and shoulders which deflects their impact and creates openings for counters or to create pressure.
Close-Range Fighting:
Golovkin uses straight punches to enter into close range, keeping his glove where it is and moving his body forward to retract his punch. From here, he continues to fight in this dangerous range, where his opponents are able to hit him without moving forward or readjusting.
At the same time, fighting within the pocket allows Golovkin to step in and deflect punches before they gain enough power. Golovkin effectively utilizes upper body movement and precise footwork for effective close range attacks.
Punching Techniques:
Golovkin fights hard in the pocket, where he smothers punches and also moves his body to different areas of the centerline to throw powerful punches. Golovkin can punish from the side and throw destructive liver shots.
Golovkin leverages his bodyweight to propel punches, curving the load for added unpredictability. Golovkin also uses his upper body movement to get his head offline and builds momentum into his strikes. His punches can change from angular to linear or to corkscrew at the last second, making them highly effective and hard to predict.
Conclusion and Final Thoughts:
There’s a reason why Triple G is regarded as a very powerful and skilled boxer, who dominates his opponents with relentless aggression, strategic footwork, and effective defensive techniques. Golovkin’s incredibly comprehensive skillset attributes to the success that he has found in the ring, making him a very formidable force in the ring.
Triple G is an incredibly talented boxer, and his record does show. Although his losses have been to only Canelo, who is an incredibly talented boxer and could literally have an entire article written about him, Golovkin is still very good. He literally has 37 knockouts, which is incredibly impressive, and has fought the best of the best (knowing how funky the boxing world is, I could see this being debated). Golovkin is going to be a fighter I’ll be watching often to learn much more about.
